“The Energy Bus” Chapter 25 to 33

December 23rd, 2014

Chapter 25 Chief Energy Officer

CEO Chief Energy Officer (a little corny again).

Rule #7 Enthusiasm Attracts More Passengers and Energizes Them  the Ride.

This is very true.  A leader that does not keep the enthusiasm for a project will lose steam and die.

People often tell me they can tell I love what I do, but I don’t see it.  They do, and that’s what counts.

Chapter 26 Love your Passengers

Rule #8 Love Your Passengers

I like this chapter.  The same thought crossed my mind.  With today’s HR rules watch out how you love your passengers.  She then explains how you can appreciate and show love for your passengers without getting into trouble.

Chapter 27 Love Rules

She gives Five Ways to Love Your Passengers, Time, Listen, Recognize, Serve, Bring Out the Best in Them.

I always say the greatest gift you can give a person is time.  If you can listen to what they are saying during that time, great. Acknowledge or recognize them during that time.   Serve them reminds of a place that I worked where every summer the management would cook and serve the employees.   I used to always plan an elaborate Christmas party in the conference room.  No alcoholic drinks but plenty of decorations, games, prizes and food that I prepared.  It was my way of showing them that I appreciated what they did all year long.  The way I brought out the best in them was to always explain the “why” behind the task I gave them.  For example, if I asked them to make a special call to an Accounts Receivable customer, I would explain to them why it was important. I always found that I got more cooperation when they knew the why.  I believe this small display of respect brought the best out of them.

Chapter 28 Fear and Trust

The “leap of faith” being a leader is not easy.  Sometime you have to go out of your comfort zone and take a leap of faith in others and in yourself.

Chapter 29 The Next Day

Rule #9 Drive with Purpose.

Purpose is the root of any project.  I always include that in the beginning of a project by giving background information.  I also use it as a self-check, or audit at the end to see if we accomplished what we set out to do.

Chapter 30 The Team Gets Inspired

George’s philosophy that he received on the bus is now spreading to this team.  The contagious inspiration is what a team is all about.

Chapter 31 Game Day

Rule #10 Have Fun and Enjoy the Ride

If you are in the right frame of mind, you will have the confidence and positive attitude to enjoy what you are doing, no matter what you are doing and no matter who you are doing it with.

I often would get so excited about projects, I would say, “This is fantastic.” and then I would see an odd look on their face and I would add, “I love it, I hope you do too.”  I find myself getting carried away whenever I came up with a good solution or new report.

Chapter 32 The Presentation

The best sentence in this chapter is “He remembered Joy telling him that his positive energy must be greater than anyone’s negativity.”  Of course he had a great presentation, no surprise there.

Chapter 33 Joy

The car is fixed and he doesn’t have to take the bus anymore.

Chapter 34 It’s More Fun on the Bus

George has a present for Joy.  It’s a new sign of the “10 RULES FOR THE RIDE OF YOUR LIFE”  the old one was hand written and difficult to read.

The End or Is It the Beginning?

Joy ends with THE ENERGY BUS ACTION PLAN

Like I said before this is a good book for the month December.  Every chapter shares perils of wisdom that can help make a difference if you are going through a rough time.

If you are not with me you are against me.

“The Energy Bus” Chapter 17 to 24

December 17th, 2014

Chapter 17 The Enemy is Negativity

Rule #5 Don’t Waste Your Energy on Those Who Don’t Get on The Bus.

I’ve been seeing more and more comments about this topic.  Don’t let negative people get you down.  Don’t focus on negative people, focus on the positive people.

During a recent illness I had, I was surrounded by many wonderful people who helped me during this time.  There was one person that was very negative and didn’t help me.  I wasted time feeling bad about the one person that didn’t help me.  The minute I decided to focus on and appreciate everyone who did help me, the positive energy returned.

Chapter 18 No Energy Vampires on the Bus

Rule #6 No Energy Vampires on the Bus

Similar to Rule #5.

Chapter 19 The Ultimate Rule of Positive Energy

Your positive energy, confidence, etc. is greater than everyone else’s energy.

Chapter 20 George Takes Control of His Bus

Saying thanks to your staff every day is not enough.  If you changed for the better, you have to show them you are changed.  Just like they say, It takes more energy to regain a lost customer. It is the same with direct reports and team mates.  If you lose them, it is harder to get them back.

Chapter 21 George has a Dream

Very short chapter to believe in the dream.

Chapter 22 Better Today than Yesterday

Since my business is Continuous Financial Improvement, you can tell that I believe that every person and business can improve.  Individuals can better themselves.  Businesses should strive to be better and keep improving.

Chapter 23 Feeling Good

He felt something was missing and Joy told him it was heart.

Chapter 24 Lead with Heart

I would substitute “passion” for “heart”.  If you believe in your heart that what you’re doing is right it comes out in action as passion for what you believe in.

If you are not with me you are against me.

“The Energy Bus” Chapter 9 to 16

December 10th, 2014

Chapter 9 and 10

Rule #2 Desire, Vision, and Focus. Move Your Bus in the Right Direction

Joy touches on complaining in this chapter and how detrimental it is to positive energy.  Complaining is poison in the work environment.  I would tell my employees that if they had a complaint they should also be ready to offer a solution to the issue.

Chapter 11

Rule #3 Power Your Ride with Positive Energy

I believe this is similar to setting a good example. If you are positive and enthusiastic about your work or project, it is contagious and your employee will pick up on it and join in.

Chapter 13 One Great Golf Shot

I like this chapter.  I’m not a golfer but I can imagine that it is true that golfer don’t talk about their 60 bad shots, they talk about their one good shot.

This also reminds me that every night when you put a child to bed you should think of one good thing that day and remind them of it and compliment them on it.

No, I didn’t forget about Chapter 12,  I just didn’t care for it.

Chapter 14 Rule #4 Invite People on the bus and share the Vision with them.

It is very logically thought to share your vision with others.  She also mentions in this chapter to share your expectations of the project and the expectations you have of them.  I think expectations are crucial to success.  If employees, bosses and customers’ expectations are not met, disappointment and failure will follow.

Chapter 15 A Very Long Weekend

Poor George has to deal with naysayers and uncooperative employees.  I would call this the “Mutiny on the Bounty.”  It is difficult to do but hopefully you have the authority to fire individuals or kick them off your team.  Turning them around is not easy.

Chapter 16 Who’s on the Bus

If you are not with me you are against me.

“The Energy Bus” Chapter 1- 8

December 3rd, 2014

The Next Book we are going to review together is The Energy Bus.  It is a little corny but very uplifting and appropriate for the holiday season.  This isn’t George Bailey, but it could be.

It’s a story about a guy named George whose car breaks down and he has to take the bus to work for two weeks while his car gets fixed. During his two week ride on the bus, the bus driver, Joy, and rest of the passengers give George a pep talk every day.  I told you it was corny.

It’s contains a good moral to the story so let’s take the bus ride.

It is an easy read only 157 pages and 33 Chapters.

Chapter 1 to 8

Chapter 1 to 3 talks about what a mess George’s life is at work and at home.  It also talks about how unhappy George is with the way things are going.

Chapter 4 to  7

The bus driver, Joy, sets George up to learn “The 10 Rules for the Ride of Your Life.”

Chapter 7 Rule #1 You’re the Driver

This is similar to the concept that you are in control of your life.  You can’t control what others say and do but you can control what you do.  There is also a little homework in this chapter too.

Chapter 8  It’s All About Energy

Here in lies the title of the book The Energy Bus

We live in an energy world not a physical world.  Joy tells him, “… thoughts are energy.”  This reminds me of the book ‘I’m Okay, You’re Okay.”  It is what we tell ourselves. There are many self-help books on this topic.  The voice inside us encourages or discourages us.
